Primitive
Sculpture
In the little Indonesian
town of Ubud, nearly everyone is an artist. At 16 or 17 they begin
rigorous technical training. They work 8 or 9 hour days until they
retire. They produce beautiful art.
In America, only the
divinely inspired drifters become artists. Their art is about freedom
from structure, responsibility and skill. As a culture we merely
dabble in the highly technical and rigorous process of creation.
The result is generally crap.
There is no internal
religious spark that spawns great art. There is education, craftsmanship,
and a relatively minor dose of aptitude.
